PCB Unveils New Champions Tournaments to Elevate Pakistan Cricket

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to elevate domestic cricket to unprecedented heights with the introduction of three new Champions tournaments for the 2024-25 season. Designed to create a highly competitive and high-pressure environment, these tournaments aim to bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket while offering enhanced earning opportunities for emerging stars.

Transforming the Domestic Landscape

The Champions One-Day Cup, Champions T20 Cup, and Champions First-Class Cup will complement the existing lineup of domestic tournaments, including the National T20 Cup, Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, President’s Trophy, President’s Cup, and the HBL Pakistan Super League 2025. Running from 1 September 2024 to 5 August 2025, the season will feature an unprecedented 261 matches across eight senior men's tournaments, marking a significant increase from the previous season's 203 matches.

Competitive Format and Elite Talent Pool

The Champions tournaments will feature five teams – Dolphins, Lions, Panthers, Stallions, and Wolves – competing in a double-league format. Approximately 150 top-performing domestic players from the past three years, alongside centrally contracted players, will participate, ensuring a mix of experience and emerging talent.

Comprehensive Support and Training Infrastructure

Each team will be mentored by former Pakistan cricket legends, with the possibility of these mentors also acting as team owners. The support staff will include highly qualified coaches, strength and conditioning experts, physiotherapists, analysts, and media managers. Training will take place at dedicated Regional High-Performance Centers in Faisalabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Sialkot.

Enhanced Financial Incentives

The PCB has introduced improved domestic contracts with three categories: Category 1 players will earn PKR550,000 per month, Category 2 players PKR400,000, and Category 3 players PKR250,000. This represents a substantial increase from the previous season. Match fees have also been significantly raised, with red-ball cricket matches now paying PKR200,000, 50-over matches PKR125,000, and T20 matches PKR100,000.

Diverse Revenue Streams

Each team will have a corporate sponsor and media partner, with additional revenue generated from broadcast rights, live-streaming, event sponsorships, ground branding, ticket sales, and merchandise.

Season Highlights

The Champions One-Day Cup will commence the season from 1-29 September, followed by a series of tournaments culminating in the Champions First-Class Cup from 28 May to 5 August. The season will also feature development and pathway tournaments, offering young players around 13,000 matches across various levels to develop their skills and impress selectors.

Visionary Leadership

PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the strategic importance of these innovations in restoring Pakistan's cricketing legacy. "Our current standings do not reflect the true potential of Pakistan cricket. The Champions tournaments are a bold step towards revolutionizing our domestic structure, providing a platform that mirrors the intensity of international cricket."

Naqvi expressed his optimism for the future, emphasizing the PCB's commitment to nurturing and preparing Pakistan's best talent for global competition. "The investments we are making through the Champions tournaments will yield immense dividends, ensuring our players are ready to represent Pakistan with distinction."

With these exciting developments, the PCB is poised to transform Pakistan cricket, offering fans and players a season filled with high-quality, competitive action.
